Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a singer that was born in Newark, New Jersey on the 9th of August, 1963. Her parents are gospel superstars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne warwick also sings. In Newark Whitney started singing in the church choir in the early years of her childhood. at the age of 15, she joined her mother in backing vocals in Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were a few of those who she sang with. Also, she was a model for Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her first gig was as a lead performer for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. The quality of her vocal work earned her the attention of major record label Arista where she signed up in 1983. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in the year. On the album, she released several hit singles including Saving all My Love for You How Are You Going to Know If You Give Good Love And The More Love of All. It earned her the first in the six Grammy Awards she has won. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney that included hits What Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built the foundation of her popularity, however it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the best-selling artists in history. The movie and her role in it were not very appreciated, but the music and her interpretation to Dolly's I Will Always Love You was a hit for a few months at the top of the charts.
