Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. In music, film and television Queen Latifah has won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nominations, and nods to her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr., a policeman and Rita educator of Irvington High School. Latifahs parents split up at the age of Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, New Jersey and was raised in the Baptist Church. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was bestowed to her her cousin at the age of she was only eight. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. She performed the number home from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah used to be a member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
